Connected Homework

The Possibility of Learning Places Network is an app that provides a digital platform for children to learn from each other but based on the world around them. For this first prototype we chose to work with children aged 10-12 who are doing their maths classes.

The goal of the network is to create local and connected learning communities that allow them to explore and discover the world around them. The main drive of the project is to connect what children learn in school with their everyday lives, providing the opportunity for homework which is creative and involves being outdoors. The communities are formed by teachers and students showing their real-life subjects or grades. It is an open tool so parents and guardians can also join.

Key aspects:

  • Mobile technology is used to explore the world around us. Children can use technology in an isolating way where the screen becomes their world. We try to evoke curiosity and provide the opportunity to create questions.
  • The network is created by people who know each other and who see each other in real life on a daily basis.
  • Creativity and collaboration are rewarded more than competition.

All the work is done by children and teachers. The app provides a platform to allow them to do so in a creative, personal and fun way e.g., choosing subjects. The tool also promotes social media creation and communication skills.

How it works

This image shows a problem created by two children in one of the participatory design workshops.

There are two ways for people to use this network:

  • Create and publish localised (maths) content using photos. children can draw over images and write problems for them. For example, imagine you are a teacher explaining multiplication to your students and, as homework, you ask them to create PoLPs (take pictures or sounds etc.) from their surroundings that are an example of multiplication. A student could take a picture of the windows of an office building, create a problem about it and upload it to share with their class.
  • Find and solve PoLPs in the areas created by other groups and classmates. There is an option to receive notifications of local PoLPs. Instead of completing homework sitting in your room, you can go out and find problems created by your classmates and get points solving, correcting and improving other children’s problems.

Children can also comment on published PoLPs. Children work in groups of three to four members.

Groups are organised within classes and schools, so there is a growing hierarchy and challenges range from an individual level up to the highest level (person, group, class, grade).

Teachers (and parents) can also participate creating problems.

Prototype made by a 10-year-old girl in one of the user interviews

We followed a design ethnography and participatory design method working with children throughout the whole process. We also interviewed children during research while trying to understand their likes and feelings when learning and playing.

We run workshops with students to get inspiration from students’ designs and mock-ups.

Next steps

A new prototype is being created which allows for testing with children and teachers in a real life setting.

FEV Tutor’s Classroom Connected Homework Help enables schools and districts to provide students the live support of a qualified tutor 24/7 from any internet-connected device.

Extend your school’s academic support beyond the bells and hallways. FEV Tutor serves as an extension of the core classroom and your teachers. It’s our job to assist and support the academic needs of every student, any time, any place. Our 1-to-1 live tutoring support is available whenever the student needs it. With the help of FEV Tutor, students can access a professional tutor “On Demand” or schedule a time to meet for help on homework, test preparation or coursework.

“On-Demand” 1:1 Virtual Tutoring Support across Core Subjects:

How it Works:

FEV Tutor works with your school’s teachers and leadership team to collect information about your standards, curriculum, initiatives and any course materials available (lesson plans, homework assignments, practice problems, etc.). These resources are organized into a resource library that our professional tutors can pull from during tutoring sessions and allow us to deliver tutoring sessions that are a true extension of your students’ classroom teachers and their core learning environment.

We work with your leadership team to determine if tutoring should be available for every student enrolled in the school or district, or if  it should be specific to a certain grade, course, or student population. Identified students are then assigned a unique username and password that provides them 24/7 access to FEV’s Virtual Tutoring Portal.

Our easy-to-use platform allows students to meet with a virtual tutor whenever they are stuck on a problem, assignment, or concept. Students can connect with a tutor in seconds with our “On Demand” feature or if they would like a more structured experience, they can pre-schedule a tutoring session through the portal. For pre-scheduled sessions, students can send the homework assignment, learning strand, concept, essay, test information, or supplemental material they would like their tutor to review it ahead of time. Tutors will have all o these resources loaded onto our whiteboard along with related curriculum resources ready for review when the student signs in.

Student Lead Sessions:

In this virtual tutoring model, students control how much guidance their tutor provides. FEV Tutor has developed a “1, 2, 3 rating approach” that empowers a student to quickly communicate whether they need the tutor to take the lead and coach them through every step of a problem, or if they simply need help from the tutor checking steps/answers as they progress through an assignment. Students work with a 1-on-1 tutor in real-time, communicating via our interactive whiteboard that helps build college and career readiness skills. Students can easily upload their homework from their desktop, post pictures of their homework taken from a smartphone, type a problem on the virtual whiteboard, or simply indicate the problem they are struggling with (if classroom teachers share assignments with FEV Tutor).

Flexible Scheduling:

The flexible nature of our “On Demand” Virtual Tutoring Services allows schools and districts to choose how they would like to offer FEV’s tutoring services. Schools can decide to offer this 1-to-1 academic support 24 hours a day/7 days a week or they can set certain “Office Hours” to open tutoring up to students. Schools can set “Office Hours” during school-day programming and after-school programs, or extend them to nights and weekends where tutoring can be accessed from home. You know your students best, which is why we let you decide what type of tutoring schedule will work for them!

Student & Family Engagement Team

Our Student & Family Engagement Team is responsible for creating awareness of our virtual tutoring solutions, counseling parents on how to take advantage of tutoring, making recommendations for best practices, and providing ongoing customer support. This support team is available 24/7 by phone and email, and engages families throughout the school year with ongoing outreach programs. These FEV staff members represent a personal touch point for parents, students, teachers, and counselor. They also help guarantee that students take advantage of the live tutoring support.

In addition to general outreach programs, FEV Tutor’s Engagement Team can strategically work with your teachers and leadership team to plan targeted student recruitment to encourage identified student populations (i.e. struggling learners) to take advantage of tutoring or to try and increase attendance leading up to End of Course or State Testing. FEV’s teams share progress reports, tutor commentary, and student feedback with parents, families, teachers, and administrators to help the school and families make informed academic decisions.
